I somehow missed the 80's music? I recall lots of 70's stuff:KC and the Sunshine Band, one of the songs from "Saturday Night Fever", etc. I was too busy growling at my Knitting Olympics project, i guess. Hmm.
It would make sense if it were a bad pun - unfortunately, I think they just like bad disco music. (although I did hear depeche mode in there, so not all bad music)
I think folks get stuck in the era that they were doing good in. It's a shame, cause there's no time like the present and one should look forward to the future; the "good ole' days" is a myth.

yeah, i heard about that on NPR... do you think they played "Village People" by way of a bad pun on the Olympic Village?

mwhahaha I had the same thought last night. It was a wierd mix of music.
